Overview

Kyphoplasty is a vertebral augmentation of the spine in which the surgeon inserts a needle into the collapsed vertebra under X-ray guidance, inflates a balloon to restore some height and fills the cavity with bone cement to stabilise the fracture and relieve pain. It is most often recommended for Kyphosis, Vertebral Compression Fractures.

The procedure is performed through a percutaneous approach under local with sedation or general and typically takes about 45 minutes. Most patients stay 1 night in hospital. The implants used are bone cement.

Partner surgeons in Turkey perform this operation regularly in accredited hospitals, and Orthopedics Abroad coordinates imaging review, surgical planning, travel and follow-up so the medical pathway is the same as it would be at home.

Who it's for

  • Kyphosis
  • Vertebral Compression Fractures

Good candidates

Good candidates for kyphoplasty have symptoms that clearly limit daily activities, imaging that confirms the diagnosis and have completed an appropriate course of non-operative treatment. General health, bone quality, body weight, smoking status and expectations are all reviewed during the medical record assessment before a surgical date is offered. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes, active infection or unmanaged cardiac disease are optimised first.

How the operation is performed

Kyphoplasty is carried out through a percutaneous approach. In summary, the surgeon inserts a needle into the collapsed vertebra under X-ray guidance, inflates a balloon to restore some height and fills the cavity with bone cement to stabilise the fracture and relieve pain. Variants include kyphoplasty, vertebroplasty; your surgeon will explain which is recommended and why. The operation lasts approximately 45 minutes under local with sedation or general.

Recovery

You spend about 1 night in hospital and begin guided rehabilitation immediately. Expect the main recovery phase to last around 2 weeks, with continued improvement for up to a year. Return to desk work is usually possible within 1 to 2 weeks, and more physical activity is reintroduced in stages agreed with your physiotherapist. A written rehabilitation protocol is provided before you fly home.

Frequently asked questions

How long does kyphoplasty take?
Around 45 minutes of operating time, plus preparation and recovery room time. You are typically in the theatre suite for two to three hours in total.
How long will I stay in hospital?
Most patients stay 1 night. Discharge depends on pain control, mobility and wound checks rather than a fixed schedule.
When can I fly home?
We usually recommend staying in Turkey for 5 to 8 days so that wound review and first physiotherapy sessions happen before travel. Compression stockings and mobility during the flight are advised.
Will I need physiotherapy at home?
Yes. Structured rehabilitation for roughly 2 weeks is part of the treatment. We provide a protocol your local physiotherapist can follow and remain available for questions.
What are the alternatives?
Bracing and analgesia; Osteoporosis treatment; Microdiscectomy in selected cases.
